Apple has revealed the iPad Mini with Retina display, the successor to last year's phenomenally successful iPad Mini. The new model now comes with a Retina-class display, boosting the resolution to match the
iPad 4 and newly announced iPad Air.
Squeezing a 2,048x1,536 resolution display into a 7.9in panel, the iPad Mini with Retina now matches its bigger brothers in terms of pixel count but thoroughly beats it in terms of pixel density. At 324 pixels per inch (PPI) it's a close race between it and Google's Nexus 7 - we'll have to wait until we get a hands-on with the new device to work out which is sharper.
Despite rumours to the contrary, Apple has only revealed two colour choices: Space grey and silver. There will be no Champagne gold version, as there was with the iPhone 5s. There's also no TouchID sensor, which will stay an iPhone-only technology for the foreseeable future.
All those extra pixels require a beefier CPU, and Apple has responded accordingly, fitting the 64-bit A7 CPU from the iPhone 5s inside the diminutive chassis. It's more energy efficient, so will still last up to ten hours on a single charge despite having a smaller battery than the original iPad Mini.
Apple will finally sell a 128GB capacity model, expanding the range from 16, 32 and 64GB variants, in either Wi-Fi only or with integrated 4G LTE models.
Apple won't be discontinuing the existing iPad Mini - instead it has announced a price drop. You can now pick up a Wi-Fi only 16GB model for £249, or a 4G model for £349. If you want a larger capacity tablet, you'll have to move up to the Retina model - all the other capacities have been discontinued.
The iPad Mini with Retina display will cost £319 for a 16GB Wi-Fi only model. Prices rise to £399, £479 and £559 for the 32GB, 64GB and 128GB models respectively. The 4G models will start from £419 for the 16GB model, rising to £499, £579 and £659 for 32GB, 64GB and 128GB respectively.
The iPad Mini with Retina display is due to go on sale from mid-November onwards.
