Will Valve unveil Steambox and Source 2 game engine this week?

With Valve's recent reveal of SteamOS and announcement that the company will be unveiling two more new things, rumours are flying all over the place. The latest one comes from a self-proclaimed employee of Valve who took to 4chan's videogames board and 'leak' some information on the upcoming reveals while bashing Microsoft and Intel. According to the supposed employee, the company will first be unveiling a reference "Steambox" running on SteamOS later today, and then a new game engine, Source 2 on Friday. The reference hardware will apparently use an AMD CPU and an Nvidia GPU. It will also be completely customisable, and users will be able to stuff in whatever hardware they want. Valve will apparently also certify hardware so as to create a baseline of minimum hardware required. To quote the employee, "It will support all hardware. All CPUs, all GPUs -- from three generations ago at the oldest for Nvidia, two for AMD and all going forward."

"The release design, however, will have a Nvidia GPU and an AMD CPU. It will use regular PC parts, however, there will be a certification program. We have to guarantee some sort of baseline performance – if there's analog out, then the audio must not crackle, PSUs that are small won't burn your house down, small cases without retarded branding, low latency wireless networking, etc. You are free to build an 800 pound glowing monstrosity if you wish, and it'll work, but that's not really what we want you to do. There will also be prebuilt and bundled solutions."Friday’s reveal, Source 2, is quite interesting. The supposed employee says that the new game engine doesn’t have a single line of DirectX code in it, which means that it will essentially use only OpenGL. This will also help the engine to be platform agnostic, since it will be able to run games on Windows, Linux and OS X out of the box. To showcase the game, Valve will apparently be releasing a new game, a bonus copy of which will be available to those who buy Nvidia’s GPUs or Steamboxes. As with all rumours on the Internet, however, we advise you to take all of this information with a grain of salt.
