Sony reveals PS4 PlayStation App, set to take on Xbox One Smartglass

Sony used its Tokyo Game Show keynote conference to reveal the PlayStation App, a smartphone and tablet app designed to turn the upcoming PlayStation 4 console into a server that can stream games to your portable devices.

The app, which will be available for both iOS and Android, would save you having to download mobile games to your smartphone. Instead, you would be able to download them to a PS4 then stream them directly. Sony has a fairly comprehensive list of PlayStation Mobile titles, taken from the huge back catalogue of games from the original PlayStation, but the app's other features could prove more useful to multiplayer gamers.

It will put the PS4's social feed, which keeps a record of your friends' recent gameplay activity, onto your smartphone. You'll be able to use PlayStation app to send and receive text and voice messages, queue up PlayStation store content to download to your console, without having to take over the TV.

Second screen content and touch-controlled gameplay will be possible once you press the "connect to PS4" button, in a similar manner to Smartglass on Microsoft's rival Xbox One.

During an on-stage demo, Sony's President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida used a smartphone to draw launch title character Knack, which was then swiped into a mini-game and turned into a 3D model.

Currently The Playroom, a free-to-play game pre-installed on all PS4 consoles, is being used to demo the app. Not all PS4 titles will include PlayStation App integration, with Knack, Driveclub, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag and Watch Dogs all set to get their own applications.

We have yet to see interactive gameplay on the same level as Smartglass, with Dead Rising 3 and The Division letting tablet owners join in with console multiplayer sessions, but it's a welcome first step for Sony.

No specific release date was mentioned during the presentation, but we expect PlayStation App to appear around the same time as the PS4 itself on the 29th of November.
