Google Nexus 5 spotted running Android 4.4 KitKat

Google isn't doing a great job of keeping its Nexus 4 successor a secret - the upcoming Nexus 5 smartphone has been spotted in a bar, giving us our first glimpse at Android 4.4 KitKat.

The handset, which was apparently left charging unsupervised by a Google employee, looks exactly like the one spotted during the KitKat Android reveal in front of Google HQ earlier this month, with horizontal Nexus branding on the rear, an oversized camera lens and a small LG logo, confirming the company is indeed handling manufacturing duties.

9to5google captured a brief video of the phone in action, which you can see below, although as it was locked you can't see much more than the passcode screen. The accompanying images show a small part of the boot animation, which looks very similar to the HTC One Google Play edition.

Unlike the recently-refreshed Nexus 7, which reused the name of Google's original budget tablet, the new Nexus smartphone is expected to change its name to reflect an increased screen size.

Based on current industry speculation, the new phone is set to be a more high-end device than the outgoing Nexus 4, with specifications based on the LG G2 including a Full HD display, 4G support and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.

Google has yet to officially confirm the Nexus 5's existence, but with this latest leak showing so much the handset is clearly almost ready for launch, so we may not have long to wait.
