Nokia / Windows duo for great triumph

I have heard many saying that “My Nokia survived so many falls”, thanks to its rough and tough build; the main attribute the Finnish manufacturer was always known for. Other areas where the manufacturer has proved excellence are its camera and sound quality. But Nokia experienced failure in the past in creating a good combo of hardware and software, ever since Android phones came in to the market. When other mobile makers launched handsets on Android platform, which got great acceptance due to its simplicity and customization options, Nokia kept hold of the lousy Symbian variants, which was the reason for losing its hold in many markets.

A shift in platform was inevitable for Nokia to survive the competition. But its decision to embrace Windows was a shock for many and it gained a lot of criticism for turning down the open source OS giant Android. Though Nokia Lumia 800 launched in 2011 had a miserable journey, the subsequent Lumia launches saw increasing acceptance in the market. With the launch of Lumia 920, 820 and 720, a majority of customers was ready to break away from Android, and adopt the all new, fresh and sophisticated Windows operating system.

With improved hardware configurations, refreshing user interface, and growing app base of Market Place, Nokia / Windows 8 OS duo seems to be very promising. Let me put down a few points that I felt worth mentioning.

  • The unlimited free download from Nokia Music is bless for all music lowers.
  • The navigation app (Here Maps) is more visually appealing than the native Android navigation app, though the utility value of both remains the same.
  • I really liked the office apps; we can easily make an excel sheet or doc and share via email. To add, many apps such as Handyscan that scans a doc, coverts to pdf and allows to you to send via email have been made available on the Market Place.
  • Kids Corner acts as a “guest mode”, preventing un-intentional data modification, when given to children for using games and other apps. You don’t need to worry about accidental purchase, download or other changes in your phone by your kid.
  • The dynamic tiles and live update on the homescreen are refreshing, compared to the Android homescreens.
  • You can turn on the battery saver mode that switches off certain services while in standby to help extend battery life. Automatic brightness adjustment also helps save battery.
  • Access to X-Box Live games hub makes it an interesting gaming device
  • The growing app base on Market Place and Nokia Store offers a lot more to explore for entertainment and productivity. Many popular games like Temple Run that were available only on Google Play are now obtainable on Market Place as well. Small but annoying issues like lack of shortcuts for connectivity options including Wi-Fi and Data – which were a swipe and click away in Android – can be easily resolved by installing connectivity apps.

But I need to mention other shortcomings that bothered me as well in this post. We can’t turn on Bluetooth right from the media file, which was possible in latest versions of Android. Selection of multiple video files in Albums also is not happening. I hope such small issues would be addressed by the makers in the coming software updates! Not to worry Windows… these shortcomings are nothing in front of the efficacies…

Nokia Lumia 920 Review

Nokia, the mobile giant on the decline has recently launched its much awaited Lumia 920 brand smartphone. The highly speculated Lumia 920 was launched in the Indian market on the 10th of January 2013. Nokia is naturally banking big on this handset as the company believes that the device will help the company to come back in the Smartphone market and come as a worthy competitor with the likes of Apple and Samsung. The fans of this veteran mobile giant’s in India are hoping that finally they will have a Nokia device that can be compared with that of iPhone and Galaxy S III.

There’s is a silver lining present in the form of the Lumia 920 in the dark looming cloud that is hanging over Nokia. If there any hope for the rise of this dwindling company that has been the largest ruler of the world’s mobile phones market, then it definitely lies on this small device called the new Nokia Lumia 920.

The Nokia Lumia 920 had its share of various kinds of speculations and views prior and post its introduction to the market. The smartphone had varying range of views that splashed over the news, ranging from favourable to critical. Let us try to find out the real story of this new release from Nokia, and also endeavour to understand its level of success and its role as the savior of its maker.

The first impression that the Lumia 920 gives you on picking it up in your hand is that it is rather bulky. The Nokia Lumia 920 is rather heavier as compared against the other top notch handsets from leading brands. However, its weight is not something that should be a reason for nuisance but in the rat race of the slimmest and lightest smartphone in the market, Nokia falls way behind in the line. As for its weight, you can definitely get accustomed to it, which can actually give a good sense of being there in your pocket.

The Nokia Lumia 920 looks simply stunning with its big 4.5-inch screen that dominates most of its front design. It does not come with a removable back panel and thus an external SIM card slot has been incorporated at the top of the handset. All the hardware controls that consist of the volume rocker, lock and a camera button are all placed on the right side of the handset for simple access. The Nokia Lumia 920 comes with vibrant glossy red panel that has a high fashion quotient, but it is also available in very sober colour schemes such as black and cyan in matte finish options.

The Nokia Lumia 920 presents the all important three backlit soft buttons, namely Return, Search and the Windows logo representing ‘Home’ that would take you through the entire Lumia 920 experience. In case you are a first time user of a Windows phone then, you will like the home screen at first sight, with lots of colour splashed across the screen, Lumia 920 will win you if you are a lover of vibrant colours. Its home screen is fully customizable. As opposed to iOS or Android, Lumia doesn’t make you go swiping across several screens to access your apps, as Lumia 920 lets you view a long list of all applications on the home screen with just a single swish and download an app on to your smartphone.

As for the widgets and applications, some of the Windows widgets are already present on the screen. Apart from this integration, it also allows to create ‘Groups’. For instance, as a default there is a Family Room, where you can chat with your family members, browse their pictures and even sync calendars to find out who’s doing what in the week. However, any person that you add to this, needs to a Windows Phone 8 platform enabled handset and that might not always be possible.

The one app that most people know about, thanks to the broad spectrum advertisements, is Nokia City Lens app that comes pre-installed on the Lumia 920 and really works nicely too. However, it still needs some work done on it, as it always does not give a refined search.

Coming to its camera that is one more important factor while looking for a phone in the modern market, the Nokia Lumia 920 comes with 8.7 mp camera at its rear. The photo enthusiasts will be enthralled to know it does not come with a Carl Zeiss lens but the one that with the PureView sports. It comes with a very bright dual-LED flash alongside it. Apart from a dedicated camera shutter button, a slight tap on the screen will also take a snap. In indoor but well lit shots, the camera gives good results.

Nokia Lumia 920’s display also makes for excellent e-books and articles reading on the internet, and the same goes for watching media. The phone’s external speakers are also high quality, as they offer a lot of clarity without being harsh.

The Nokia Lumia 920 runs on a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and comes with 1GB of RAM. This high configuration helps in keeping most functions run smoothly on the smartphone. However, it still might show you the loading app time with some of the app launches even after their download. These small slowdowns may seem to be little offbeat as compared to the other top notch Android handsets.

Nokia Lumia 920 comes with a commendable internal storage capacity of 32 GB, with no expansion of the memory by external memory cards supported by this handset. The battery levels of the Lumia 920 are also good. The 2,000 mAh battery can support an entire day’s phone calls, messaging as well as a lot of internet activity.

It can be well said that the leading mobile brand of the past has done justice by packing the Nokia Lumia 920 with a lot of good and worthy features. The Lumia 920 with its good looks and bright colours, great screen space and the brilliant Windows interface, is surely a worthy competitor in the market. Moreover, it carries Nokia’s patent sturdy and tough built. With a price tag of Rs 38,199, the Nokia Lumia 920 is definitely a smartphone that is here to stay in the market that is dominated by its more prominent rivals.

Nokia Lumia 710 Review

The Lumia series is the big bate of Nokia to come back in the mobile phone market which it once ruled for a very long time. The Nokia Lumia 710 is the younger sibling of the already acclaimed Nokia Lumia 800. The Lumia 710 is a lot cheaper than the 800 version and comes with a friendly and decent looks. So, is the Lumia 710 actually a better choice than its elder sibling in terms of overall performance and more pocket friendly price tag? Let us take a closer look at this windows phone from Nokia.

Lumia 710’s design and built

The Lumia 710 comes in a basic demure black back cover, but not to worry for your love of colours, Nokia has arranged a whole array of coloured back covers in flashy shades that you can choose from at the time of purchase. The device’s back has a matte finish cover, while the front fascia whilst is covered in all glass. Owing to the fully glass and glossy front it is also a fingerprint magnet. As for its sleekness, it has a thickness of 12.5 mm, which is not the thinnest in the market currently. However, the Lumia 710 has a contoured and curved back which makes it look and feel sleek.

The Nokia Lumia 710 has a display of 3.7-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and Gorilla Glass protection. The device’s speaker is located at the back as all Nokia phones and so is the first of the two noise cancellation microphones, with the second one being invisible. The top of the phone has a microUSB slot, the power button as well as the headphone jack. The volume rocker and camera shutter buttons are on the right of the device. Lumia 710 does not support expandable memory and thus, with its 8GB internal memory, it has given a microSD card slot a miss.

Like all Nokia mobiles, its Lumia 710 also comes with its maker’s patent sturdiness and durability. Nokia is still known for its really durable phones and 710 adhere to this fact as well. It feels solid and gives a rich feel rather than toy-like with a light plastic body. With a weight of 125.5 grams the Lumia 710 is conveniently light as sturdy, with a stylish design that can overtake any other in the same price range.

In terms of functionality, multitasking is definitely there but it does need a little work on it as every time you launch an app will have to load. However, this issue will definitely be rectified by Nokia in future.

Lumia 710’s interface and media

The Windows Phone 7.5 Mango does the trick for Nokia Lumia 710. It is quick and easy and works brilliantly. If you are a first time user of a Windows Phone then you will simply love the great usage of colours splashed all over the User Interface as against the rather drag Android UI or even Apple UI.

The application list comes up with a right swipe from the home screen. All the apps are neatly segregated based on their names, and if case of a long list, a press on any alphabet depending on the name, is enough for an easy location of an app. The 710 also lets you do a lot of customization to enhance your phone’s look and feel and the vibrant, radiantly designed Mango user interface will make sure that you never get bored of your Nokia Lumia 710.

Coming to the media interface, it follows the same eye candy interface as the rest of the phone. It has all the general functions found in a smartphone as well as some extra features. All the media content of the phone are stashed up neatly in the music and videos tile. The main screen allows choosing which media to be played. The built-in FM radio also works very well.

The package of the Lumia 710 provides one of the best in-ear headphones that you can come across. The speaker is located at the back, thus the sound gets little muffled if you keep the phone on its back, but it is loud and clear.

The only down side is that you will have to use Zune to get all your media content onto your smartphone. However, it is not difficult to use Zune, so that shouldn’t be a major problem either.

Lumia 710’s camera

The Nokia Lumia 710 comes with a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with an LED flash. The camera is capable of capturing good details though on first start it takes a bit time for colour stabilization. It takes care of all your basic photo shooting needs. The video recording option has a 720p resolution with no zoom option during the recording. However, the 710 lacks a front camera for video calling needs.

Lumia 710’s connectivity and battery

The Nokia Lumia 710 has a full proof connectivity options armed with the 3G HSDPA at 14.4 Mbps and HSUPA at 5.76 Mbps, Wi-Fi, GPS with A-GPS support and Bluetooth. Call quality is really good and the phone doesn’t seem to drop out signal even in elevators.

The Lumia 710 also offers a good browsing speed through its inbuilt Internet Explorer. However, it does not support flash, which might be a concern for some flash users, but it definitely has the more important HTML5 in its default browser.

One vital benefit of the Nokia Lumia 710 is its Nokia Drive and Maps. The Nokia Drive provides quick GPS signal and once the destination is set, the phone displays the best route, time and distance. Nokia maps offer a search for landmarks and places as well as your current location.

All the social networking and email requirements are well taken care of by the Lumia 710 with Twitter and Facebook integrated at the OS level.

Coming to its Battery life, the Lumia 710 is powered by a 1300 mAh battery. The battery provides a real two hours and ten minutes of constant calling, two hours of video and two hours of music as well as streaming, which makes it capable of lasting for an entire day with a single charge.

Nokia Lumia 820 Windows 8 Mobile Review

Nokia Lumia 820 (Price: Approx. Rs 26,000)

Design And Build Quality
Instead of following the current trend of slim and light handsets, the Lumia 820 aims for sturdiness. To accommodate a removable battery, Nokia has done away with the unibody design that was a signature of the Lumia 800, the 900 and the 920. The quality of materials used for the handset's innards and outer shell are top notch. The precision build and attention to detail is impressive, as always with high-end Lumias.

Nokia's affair with bright colours continues with the Lumia 820. The handset comes in glossy cyan, red, yellow, purple, and white. For those who prefer matte finish, the choice is between gray and black. Since the phone features exchangeable shells, you can buy extra panels if you get bored of the colour of the one that came with it. With the Wireless Charging Shell (not yet available, and to be bought separately), the Lumia 820 can take a power nap on Fatboy's charging pillow. Having used this feature on the Lumia 920, I can attest to the claim that it's a very convenient way of charging the phone.

Features & Performance
The spec sheet is fairly acceptable all along, except for the display. And we will touch upon that, before looking at the rest of the features on the Lumia 820. While Windows Phone 8 has removed any restrictions that the manufacturers would have faced in trying to deploy higher-res screens, Nokia decided to walk the old path. There is the 4.3-inch AMOLED display with 480x800 pixel resolution. Incidentally, the Lumia 900 also has the same resolution with the same size AMOLED display. And it is currently retailing for much lesser than the Lumia 820 would. Basing this decision on the fact that the phone does have a newer OS is just not right. Having said that, we must say that the overall display quality is acceptable. The deep black levels help the colours look rich. Text is fairly crisp, and while the display is reflective, it shouldn’t ideally hamper usability. Having said that, there are only three brightness settings – low, medium and high. Overall, while this display works, we expected something better. Particularly in the price bracket this phone is playing in.

Windows Phone OS has always had the advantage of being nimble even on hardware that may be considered low spec for most Android phones. The Lumia 820 has a dual-core processor clocking at 1.5GHz along with 1GB of RAM. The critical bit is – Windows Phone 8 does not feel any heavier or resource hungrier than the Windows Phone 7.5 we saw on Lumia 900, which was powered by a single core processor and had just 512MB of RAM. System performance is quite good, and no issues at all with any slowdowns under the same app load that we use to test phones.
Memory expansion, or the lack of it, was big deal for the previous generation Windows phones. That has been solved this time around, and the Lumia 820 comes with 8GB internal storage and a micro SD card slot for up to 64GB more.
Call quality is more than acceptable, and this is pretty much at par in terms of signal reception to the Lumia 900. The earpiece is soft, and while it is quite loud, you will feel the need for a little more volume if you are speaking on this while walking down a busy market alley. The handsfree speaker is loud enough for hosting a conference in a small-ish room, and that’s about it.
The Nokia Lumia 820 comes with a 1650mAh removable battery. The backup times offered by this brick, when used as a primary phone, is a day and a half comfortably. The wireless charging option is available for Lumia 820, but for that, you will need to buy a back cover shell and one from the wireless charging plate or the fatboy pillow. At the time of writing this, the prices for these accessories are still not revealed on Nokia India’s online store, but do not expect this to come any cheap.
Display And Specs
The 820 features a 4.3" screen with pixel dimensions of 800x480. The pixel density of 217 ppi isn't great by today's premium smart phone standards, but not bad enough to complain. In comparison, the less expensive Android based 4.0" Sony Xperia P has 275 ppi; then the 4.0" HTC 8S which is the Windows Phone 8 competitor to the Lumia 820, has 233 ppi (same number of pixels, but on a slightly smaller display). Since the Lumia's Windows Phone 8 UI contains mostly tiles and straight lines, the effect of lesser number of pixels is less pronounced to the user. The display is bright and makes the colours pop-out. More importantly, black levels offered by the Lumia 820's AMOLED display is stunning. Since Nokia has used full-RGB matrix, there's no blueish ting, as found on most AMOLED screens including that of the GALAXY S III. Thanks to Nokia's ClearBlack technology, the screen delivers outstanding sunlight legibility. It's also one of the brightest screens out there on a mobile phone. To put things in perspective, we compared the Lumia 820's screen with its closest rival HTC 8S, and here's the result. Note that, brightness is set to maximum on both the handsets.
Camera
In the camera department, the Lumia 820 features an 8 mp Carl Zeiss lens and a dual-LED flash. There's no denying that this snapper is no match for the 920's Pureview tech. However, it does a fine job in its price segment. The resulting pictures contain fair levels of details. Colours look natural too. However, image noise is evident, but then, this issue is common across most mobile phone cameras. Click here, to download the untouched sample.
The Lumia 820 can record 1080p videos at 30 fps, mono audio, saving the clip in MP4 format.
Similar to the Lumia 920, this phone comes preinstalled with Nokia exclusive lenses such as Cinemagraph, Smart shoot, and Panorama. To find out the usage of these camera plugins, go through our detailed article about Nokia's nifty camera tricks.
Battery
The 820's 1650 mAh Li-Ion battery provides sufficient juice for it to last from dawn to dusk during a normal work day. In our 720p video loop test, it lasted around 6 hours, 30 minutes which is quite good for a phone with dual-core CPU.

Verdict
The Lumia 820 is a solid piece of hardware, no doubt; and Microsoft has gotten its latest mobile OS right; which means, the fundamentals are covered. The bonuses come in form of the AMOLED display, multimedia performance, Nokia's exclusive navigation software, music service, and camera lenses (the software). If your budget for a smart phone is at the Rs 25,000 mark, and you are not stuck to earlier platforms, the Lumia 820 is the smartphone to go for [if you are an Android fan, you can only pick up a generation old flagship at this price].

Nokia Announces Bigger, Better Lumia 920 : Tech Secs and First Impressions

The giant Finnish telecomconglomerate Nokia, in order to redeem its hold on the smartphone market, has just announced its first ever Windows Phone 8 driven handset Nokia Lumia 920. The handset is going to offer the users what was missing in the previous handsets of the company, such as bigger and better display, a dual core processor, smarter camera, and stronger battery.  It is, perceived by many, as the last attempt by the company to come to the fore as a world class player in the smartphone arena. Let’s find out what exactly does the Nokia Lumia 920 has on offer.

State of Art Display

This time the Lumia has not just come to light with a bigger display but the screen is better too. The Lumia 910 had a 4.3 inch screen with a pretty average screen resolution of 480x320p but this time the Lumia has a 4.5 inch IPS screen with a pixel resolution as high as 1280x768. The screen is a PureMotion HD display, which sports a corning gorilla glass protection. Virtuoso.

First ever Dual Core Processor

Yeah, this device unlike other Windows driven device houses a dual core processor. The Nokia Lumia 920 has Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon chipset over which there is Dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait processor, making its presence felt to everyone. The processor is well complimented by a 1GB RAM. Electrifying.

Camera

For those who have their interests vested in photography, the Nokia Lumia 920 has a "PureView" 8 MP camera which is said to offer better video and still images than rival smartphones. There is no need for me to remind the readers that this is the same technology used in the revolutionary Nokia 808 which boasts of a humongous 41MP camera. The 920 has a 1.3MP front camera for video chat and self portrait.

Data Connectivity

The 4G capable handset has GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth with A2DP and EDR, USB 2.0, and NFC in the data connectivity.  The mentioned things are all that you want in a modern day smartphone. The Lumia 920 passes the test here too, with distinction, of course.

Other Features

The handset has a storage capacity of 32GB and, in addition, the user gets a 7GB of cloud storage. Excellent. In the battery segment the handset has a powerful 2000 mAh Li-Ion battery, which will let you stay connected for a longer period time. And for those who like their handsets to be vibrant in colors, Nokia has brought the handset in many glossy colors.
Let the Q4 of the year come and we will witness how true is all the hue and cry that has been created around the Nokia Lumia 920. Fingers crossed.
