Xbox One SmartGlass for Android gets bug-fix update

Microsoft continues to fix bugs with its Xbox One console, releasing a new version of the SmartGlass second-screen app for Android devices.

First launched for the Xbox 360, SmartGlass is designed to offer gamers a means of interacting with their console beyond the TV display itself. Similar in principle to Sony's linking of the PS4 and the PlayStation Vita, or Nintendo's tablet-like Wii U controller, the software lets users interact with friends, control the console, browse the web and view additional content from selected games and streamed films - character biographies or information about deleted scenes, for example.

The Xbox One version of the app, however, hasn't been the most stable of software. Thankfully, Microsoft has followed its release of a bug-fixing firmware update for the Xbox One console itself with an upgrade for SmartGlass designed to address the most common problems with the app.

According to the company's change log, the new version solves numerous bugs that would cause the application to crash or hang, issues with the Xbox Companion portion of the software failing to launch, and pop-over image links being broken. Additional fixes include expansion of the Xbox Live Achievements list, better auto-reconnect support, a new error message when the user tries to use SmartGlass when not connected to a Wi-Fi network, and various other tweaks.

The software still needs some work, however: while both portrait and landscape modes are available, owners of 7in devices like the popular Google Nexus 7 will find that only portrait mode is available - a known bug Microsoft claims to be working to address.

The updated software is available now for all Xbox One owners free of charge from Google Play.
