Microsoft has removed its most recent firmware update for the Surface Pro 2 Windows 8.1 tablet, following reports that it can fail to install correctly and affect battery life.
The Surface Pro 2 was introduced as the successor to Microsoft's first own-brand attempt at a fully-fledged Windows 8 tablet, the Surface Pro. With significantly improved battery run-time, the tablet proved popular enough that the company is struggling to meet demand in the Christmas selling period - but the most recent firmware update, released earlier this month as part of the company's regular Patch Tuesday update cycle, has users struggling with the device.
Initially, the problem appeared to be limited to an error, 80070490, which appeared when the user attempted to install the update, downloaded automatically through Windows Update. While the error suggested the firmware hadn't been upgraded, Microsoft claimed that in most instances the firmware was in fact installing correctly.
Soon, however, users began to report issues with the device's run-time on battery dropping considerably with the firmware installed, while others found that the tablet's processor would show heavy usage when resuming from sleep and stay there until rebooted.
Now, Microsoft has admitted that there's a problem and removed the firmware upgrade from the Windows Update system. "To ensure the best experience for our customers during the holiday season, we have taken steps to remove the update for Surface Pro 2," the company explained in a statement. "We are working to release an alternative update package after the holidays."
For those who have already installed the update, however, there is no work-around for the problems at present beyond waiting for Microsoft's update to the update.
