Instagram sends invites for December 12 event, may unveil private messaging

Instagram seems to have new features up its sleeve. The photo-sharing service owned by Facebook has sent out invites for an event on December 12 where it just may be unveiling the new feature – or maybe even more than one. The invite, says CNET, has not been emailed to journalists in the US, but instead has been mailed to them. It contained an invite to come “share a moment” with Kevin Systrom and the Instagram team on December 12. It also contained a print of an Instagrammed image.

Now, most services – including the likes of Apple and Instagram’s parent company, Facebook – are known to drop hints with invites for events. Speculation is now rife that Instagram may be venturing offline, with printed images from the service. While this sounds pretty much the reverse of digitisation, we wouldn’t put it past Instagram. There are a bunch of services that currently use Instagram to make merchandise look more beautiful. We have some printing Instagram images on objects, wallets and even edible marshmallows. Now, Instagram could possibly want a piece of the action too. TechCrunch points out that with Christmas round the corner, this could be a profitable venture for Instagram too, especially now since it has introduced a revenue stream via ads in the US. The other possibility, based on some solid rumours doing the round since the last couple of weeks, is that Instagram is indeed going the Snapchat way and introducing private messaging to its service. Earlier this month it was revealed that Instagram was testing the “@instagram.com” email address with a handful of users.

Instagram could well make both ideas a possibility this festive season, but we’re placing our bets on a private messaging service, just in time for Christmas. The invites were private messages in a way. Make our Christmas, Instagram!
