In a rare move, the Ashes Cricket 2013 game has been cancelled, after it had already been released. The buggy game, which had been available for sale on Steam, has not only been pulled off the platform, but has also been outright cancelled by publishers 505 Games.
In a statement, 505 Games, has apologised for the game’s dismal performance and has decided to offer everyone who purchased the game a full refund. The statement also puts the blame on developers Trickstar for the buggy game, which was launched to coincide with the ongoing Ashes series.
Cancelled
Ashes Cricket 2013 was originally slated to release in June 2013 and was then pushed on to July. The game was finally released in November 2013 for Steam and was also slated to have a release on Wii U, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. However, severe technical issues on Steam forced the publishers to pull the game and eventually cancel it.
In the statement, 505 Games writes, “As most people who have followed the project closely can affirm, the development of Ashes Cricket 2013 has been fraught with challenges almost from the outset.” It goes on to put the blame on the chosen developer who failed to overcome challenges brought on by the Unity game engine. The publishers have apologised to everyone from the ECB and Cricket Australia to the boards’ sponsors and fans.
The game, by all accounts, was extremely buggy and had missing features. A quick look at YouTube throws up videos of neverending running by the batsmen, and players walking through each other. The characters were unrecognisable and controls - the game didn't have mouse support and keyboard controls weren't published - were missing. However, people who did manage to buy the game will be contacted by 505 Games to get a full refund for the purchase. Well, at least you can still switch on the TV and see Ashes play out for real.
