With Twitter to Facebook and everyone in between releasing year-end lists, how can Google be too far behind? Google’s Year-End Zeitgeist list for 2013 has a fun Year in Review video and a list of most searched terms. Amit Singhal, Senior Vice President and Google Fellow, wrote in a blog post that Nelson Mandela, unsurprisingly, made it to the top of the charts globally. In India, the most searched term was IRCTC, Indian Railways’ online booking site. The top trending term was Chennai Express, the Rohit Shetty produced, Shah Rukh Khan starrer.

Globally, terms relating to deaths and tragedies ruled most of the chart with Mandela, The Fast and The Furious star Paul Walker and Glee actor Cory Montieth, all of those who died this year, turning out to be some of the most searched people the world over. Technology too was second to none with the iPhone 5s perched on the number three position followed by the Samsung Galaxy S4 on eighth and PlayStation 4 on the ninth position. Xbox One was nowhere on the top ten list. A special mention goes to viral dance style Harlem Shake for coming up in the fifth position. Although, we have a feeling that the term was being searched for because people were confused why dancers were flailing their bodies around. Check out the video of the top search terms put together by Google: In India, Narendra Modi being announced as the PM candidate for BJP was the most searched for news event this year. Understandably, Modi was also the most searched for politician in the country. The Bollywood-crazy users of Google Search ensured Katrina Kaif, Salman Khan, Aashiqui 2 and Sunny Leone were some of the most searched for terms this year. Sachin Tendulkar was the most searched for sportsperson this year, and pretty much no one’s surprised, since the Master Blaster’s retirement from Crciket was the social event of the season this year. While iPhone 5s may have grabbed most eyeballs globally, India was ruled by the Galaxy S4, followed by Nokia Lumia 520, Micromax Canvas 2 and Galaxy Grand.
