Facebook sensation Bitstrips gets $3 million funding, 30 million avatars in 2 months

Riding on its status as the current rage on Facebook, Bitstrips has raised $3 million in funding. The comic-making app is currently seeing a streak of popularity, with 30 million avatars created in the past two months alone. For those of you who haven’t already seen this curious app on your timelines yet, Bitstrips can be used to create avatars of yourself. You can choose what your avatar wears and how it looks. Some have successfully managed to make a lot of these avatars look like themselves. These avatars can then go on to star in comic strips by themselves or with friends. There are a bunch of scenes that you can put your character in and Bitstrips keeps adding more over time for users to explore. Bitstrips even has an iOS and Android app for users to make comics on the go.

In a blog post – which was obviously in the form of a long comic strip – Jacob Blackstock’s avatar made a bunch of announcements regarding the app. First up was the fact that 30 million avatars have been created on the web and app versions of Bitstrips. Owing to the sudden surge in popularity, Bitstirps had been seeing trouble with its servers. The team brought on board Horizon Ventures from Hong Kong and closed a funding round of $3 million, using which it hopes to hire more employees to handle the load its global popularity has thrown up.Apart from this, Bitstrips said it also realised that there has been a deluge of comic strips on people’s timelines and to counter this, the company has added some new security and sharing settings. Users will now be able to share their personalised comics within the app, or privately by text or email. This should solve the issue of Facebook users complaining regularly about the strips.
