Dual-screen YotaPhone with e-ink display goes on sale in Europe

The dual-screen YotaPhone has gone on sale in Russia and parts of Europe already, with a wider international rollout expected in the next few months. The Android device has a regular LCD screen on the front and an impressive e-ink panel on the back of the phone. The phone, made by Russian modem developer Yota Devices, is making its debut this month in countries like Russia, Austria, France, Germany and Spain. Yota Devices plans to sell the phone in 20 countries across the world next year, including the UK and the Middle East. The dual-display phone is priced at €499 in Europe and 19,980 rubles in Russia, which translates to approximately Rs 41,900.

The 4.3-inch smartphone sports a full colour 720 x 1,280 LCD screen on one side and an electronic paper display on the other. The device will essentially double up as a phone and an e-reader, all at the same time. The YotaPhone packs a 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 chip, but the variant has not been announced. There’s a 2GB RAM and a rather small 1,800mAh battery to run the show. The specs may seem a little outdated, considering it was first spoken about a whole year ago, but the dual-display will prove to be the USP of the YotaPhone. The device has been touted by the company as an “always on, low power display” one, specifically because the e-ink pulls in barely any power to display static images. The phone allows for 50 hours of reading time using the e-ink screen and can be used to display nearly everything you can see on the main screen, cutting down on the amount of battery it consumes. Take a quick look at the YotaPhone’s salient features:

  • 4.3-inch 720 x 1,280 LCD, capacitive multi-touch, 360 x 640 EPD

  • LTE, 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n,

  • Bluetooth version 4.0

  • GPS with A-GPS and GLONAAS

  • 13 megapixel rear camera, 1MP front-facing camera

  • 32GB on board memory

Yota is hoping to sell over 5,00,000 YotaPhones in all territories by next year. Surprisingly, there do not seem to be any plans to release the dual-screen device in US and there is no word on an India release either.
