Details of the upcoming Asus PadFone Mini have leaked ahead of its formal unveiling on Wednesday, showing a 4.3in version of the Padfone and 7in Padfone tablet.
The latest entry in Asus' dual-format PadFone line-up, the PadFone Mini shrinks down the original concept of a smartphone which can dock with a larger display to become a tablet. Where the PadFone 2, launched earlier this year, has a 4.7in smartphone that docks into a 10.1in tablet, the PadFone Mini is expected to drop to a 4.3in smartphone docking into a 7in tablet.
Formal specifications are not expected to be announced until Asus' official press event in Taiwan on Wednesday, but rumours have suggested that the dual-format device will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, launch with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with an upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat to follow, and support only 3G networks with no 4G LTE modem.
Images of the device have been leaked by the notorious @evleaks Twitter account, showing a more compact design which still attempts to solve the conundrum of multiple devices neatly: all data and apps are stored in the smartphone section, with the tablet part forming a simple dock. Regardless of which mode the device is in at any given time, the user will see the same user interface with the same applications and the same stored data - while the cost is, theoretically, reduced over two separate devices thanks to shared components such as the camera, processor, memory and modem.
Asus has refused to comment on the leak, but is expected to formally announce the device at a press event on Wednesday.
