Chinese manufacturer Zopo Mobile has launched a new smartphone with MediaTek’s latest “true” octa-core MT6592 processor running the show. Titled the Zopo ZP998, the handset comes with a really good $299 (Rs 18,800 approx) price tag. While it has officially been launched, the device is only available for pre-order and will ship in 30 days. There is currently no word on when this device will be coming to India, if at all. For the ZP998, Zopo has elected to go with the lower-powered version, which comes with eight ARM Cortex-A7 cores clocked at 1.7GHz and a Mali 450 GPU. Unlike other octa-core chipsets like Samsung’s Exynos 5 octa version, the MediaTek version is able to utilise all eight cores at once, instead of working in a big.LITTLE configuration seen in Samsung's chip. It also sports 2GB of RAM as well as 32GB of internal memory that can be expanded up to 64GB via a microSD card slot. On the connectivity-front, the device comes with the usual suspects like USB OTG, NFC and Bluetooth 4.0.
MediaTek's new processor inside
The handset comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p IPS display, which amounts to a pixel density of 401ppi. Zopo has said that its display is highly sensitive, making use with gloved hands possible. There is no word on whether the display comes with Gorilla Glass protection, though. For photographers, the handset offers a 14-megapixel rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture. The ZP998 also comes with a 5-megapixel front shooter. Here’s a quick look at the specifications of the Zopo ZP998:
- 5.5-inch 1080p IPS display, 401 ppi
- USB OTG, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0
- 32GB internal memory, expandable up to 64GB via microSD card slot
- 14-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture; 5-megapixel front camera
Other features include something called BE Voice technology that tweaks the levels of volume for your voice depending on your surroundings or distance from the device. Zopo has also tweaked the operating system of the handset, adding in a quick gesture app launcher that can be used without unlocking the device. All in all, the Zopo ZP998 seems like a good deal, especially when you consider the price point. There is still no word, unfortunately, on whether the company plans to offer the device in other markets.
