YouTube acknowledges issues with comments, rolling out fixes

The massive outrage over YouTube’s new comment system has not gone unheard. YouTube has acknowledged the presence of increased spam since the new comments system integrated with Google+ came into place and has made a few updates to address the issues. In a blog post on the YouTube Creator blog, the video-sharing website’s comments team wrote that it has been receiving and paying heed to a lot of feedback that has been pouring in from creators and partners. “While the new system dealt with many spam issues that had plagued YouTube comments in the past, it also introduced new opportunities for abuse and shortly after the launch, we saw some users taking advantage of them,” they wrote.

In order to combat the spam that has been plaguing the new comments system, YouTube has announced that it has made a number of updates including better recognition of bad links and impersonation attempts. Another important issue that cropped up with this change in the comments system was the increase in ASCII spam. Commenters took full advantage of the ASCII art feature, posting everything from human genitalia to swastikas in order to show their displeasure with the comments system. YouTube has said that it now has an improved ASCII art detection is in place. It has also changed how long comments are now displayed on the website.YouTube rolled out Google+ integrated comments on the service a couple of weeks ago much to the dismay of regular users. Not only were the users annoyed about having to forgo anonymity while posting on to YouTube’s comments, a bunch of bugs and a haphazard rollout led to more ire amongst them. Check out some of the issues that popped up for most users during the initial launch of the new YouTube comments. The comments team has acknowledged that the spam issue made it hard for users to put the new system to work initially and said that it was excited to see more users getting involved as it fixed issues. “New features like threaded conversations and formatted comments are coming to life, thanks to you and your fans,” the team wrote.YouTube has also said that next on its radar is the ability to help content creators manage comments on their videos better. It hopes to release tools to make bulk moderation easier soon too. Also, the fact that YouTube is looking at improving comment ranking and moderation of old-style comments is something that will make some creators very happy.
