With KitKat, Google improves Bluetooth integration with cars

Android 4.4 KitKat brings with it a host of new features and support that should be quite useful for Android's many users. A quick look at the list of features of the new OS posted by the Android Developer Community now reveals that the new software will come with Bluetooth MAP support in tow.So how does this support help, you might ask? Bluetooth MAP or Message Access Profile can be used to sync your handset to a car’s onboard infotainment system using the vehicle’s display or audio system so that you have hands free usage while driving. This means that users will get notifications for new emails, social networking services or even calls, will be able to check the notifications, upload messages or emails and even send the same or initiate phone calls. And the MAP profile will also allow users to communicate with other devices like TVs, message panels, digital picture frames, eBooks, pagers, portable navigation systems or even wearable Bluetooth devices.

Ford will be launching its SYNC AppLink in India next year

Android 4.4 nows comes with Bluetooth MAP profile support

Quite a few automobile companies like Ford, BMW and Lexus already make use of this feature. Ford, in fact, recently introduced its on-board system, Ford SYNC AppLink, to India, announcing that this will be seen in many of its 2014 models. While the technology for this integration may have been around for quite some time, most Android devices could not be used. This was because the devices did not come with support for the feature as Google only provided the basic BlueZ stack on its stock OS.The lack of support may be the reason why many Android-powered devices in the past have not even come with support for MAP. Android 4.4, however, changes all this, as the Android Bluetooth stack now natively supports the MAP profile, which will expand the operability functions of in-car Bluetooth functions. While the profile does have other uses, the primary application is often seen in automobiles. All in all, this will be good news for Android users who may want to use their smartphones for more than just music while driving.
