Even while Twitter has largely managed to stay out of the limelight during the NSA outrage that engulfed companies like Google, Yahoo! and even Facebook, the micro-blogging website is not relaxed about it. Twitter may soon start to encrypt Direct Messages amongst other forms of security for users on the website. A report in The New York Times suggests that Twitter is already in the midst of developing a variety of new security measures. This includes the encryption of the Direct Messaging feature Twitter offers to members. The article mainly talks about what measures are being taken by tech companies to tighten the strings on their data so it's kept away from the NSA’s prying eyes.
DMs may be a lot safer now
Twitter is also rumoured to be toying with the idea of making the DM feature a standalone app, separate from the Twitter one. Just recently Twitter introduced a new feature associated with DMs that allowed users who you aren’t following to send you a private message. On the back of this very idea, Twitter seems to be kicking around the thought of a standalone app using which users can interact amongst themselves quite the way you can with Facebook Messenger. Now, it looks like Twitter is all set to take DMs one step forward, making personal messaging – an indispensable feature of the micro-blogging website – safer to use with encryption. Preemptive measure, sure, but with its IPO round the corner, Twitter will surely not be in any mood to take a risk with security. This is definitely a welcome move.
