Children between the age group of 8 and 12-years of age in India who access the Internet via multiple devices are prone to the perils of being online such as cyberbullying, and close contact with strangers. A study was conducted by security solutions provider McAfee and its findings released this week. The “Tweens and Technology report 2013” studied the Internet habits of about a thousand children in tier-1 cities of the country. The report also shed light upon the Internet habits of tweens in India.
Tweens at major risk while being online
It has been reported that 53 percent of online tweens access the Internet for one to three hours daily. 45 percent of these tweens are online later than 8PM. Facebook, understandably, is the most preferred social networking website for children between the ages of 8 and 12-years. 70 percent of online tweens are on Facebook despite the age restrictions on the website. 44 percent of them use Skype and Twitter is used by 27 percent of them. With children between ages of 8 and 12 going online and interacting on social networking websites – with or without the permission of parents – they’re put at plenty of risks of being online. About 58 percent of these tweens surveyed used risky or low level security passwords and 41 percent of them have shared information over Facebook. 21 percent of the kids had shared personal information online in general and 26 percent of them did not think this to be risky. Disturbingly, 36 percent of all online tweens have chatted with a stranger online. “Sometimes, when children receive friendship requests from strangers, they don’t know how to process them,” Anindita Mishra, Online Child Safety Evangelist with McAfee, said at a panel discussion regarding the topic. Mishra released the findings of the study on her blog on behalf of McAfee later. “There is an increasing influence of the online world on children’s persona that cannot be undermined because of the emotional and developmental impact it has. The role of parents in delivering safe and positive cyber experience to their kids is significant than ever before. Having a genuine and transparent two-way communication with children is absolutely fundamental to establishing a safe and positive cyber experience,” she added.
