Ever wanted to play a game based on George Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series (or Game of Thrones for those of you who don’t like books) that was actually good? According to IGN, your wishes may come true soon. The website is citing multiple unnamed sources, stating that Telltale has gotten hold of the rights to work on games based on Martin’s series. Whether this will be a completely original story, based on the books, show or side stories is currently unknown. There are a number of options for storylines Telltale could choose, such as the main story itself, the Dunk and Egg stories, or even take a look the world’s history by looking at Robert Baratheon’s rebellion. What we do know is that if Telltale does make it, it’ll probably end up being great.
We'd be surprised if a character played by Sean Bean actually survives
IGN tried reaching out to Telltale to see if the studio would fess up, but Senior Vice President of Publishing Steve Allison said, “We get these sorts of rumors about what we could be working on next cropping up all the time. Officially we have no comment.”
There have been a couple of games based on Martin's series, such as the strategy game Game of Thrones: Genesis and the RPG simply titled Game of Thrones. Sadly enough, these haven't been very good.
Telltale is no stranger to making games based on pre-established IPs. It has worked on a wide variety of them, including Tales of Monkey Island, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, and more recently, The Walking Dead and Fables. The latter two have received critical acclaim, and The Walking Dead even won our Game of the Year award in 2012.Currently, the studio is working on the episodic title The Wolf Among Us, which is based on the Fables graphic novels. It is also working on the much-awaited season 2 of The Walking Dead.
