Sony confirms Xperia smartphone Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade plans

expertreviews.co.uk-siena -

Sony has confirmed that it will be upgrading the software on its newest Xperia smartphones and tablets to the latest version of Android, 4.4 KitKat, but not until they receive updates to 4.3.

The company said it had seen "lots of questions" on its Android upgrade roadmap from owners, and has released a summary of its upgrade plans as a result.

Android 4.3 will begin rolling out for the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 from next month. These updates will be staggered, meaning availability will vary by market - which doesn't take into account the delays associated with approvals from the mobile networks.

Following those updates, Android 4.4 KitKat will be coming to the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1.

The Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V will also be getting an upgrade to 4.3 Jelly Bean starting next month, but there are currently no plans for a KitKat update.

Sony will be keeping customers up to date via the @SonyMobileNews twitter account, where it will "update you with specific info on product upgrade timings & software features as things progress".
