Per carità! Windows Phone more popular than iOS in Italy

Microsoft's Windows Phone mobile operating system has been growing in Europe for some time, but new sales data suggests it may have actually overtaken Apple's iOS - at least in Italy.

The latest smartphone sales data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows that for the three months to September 2013, Windows Phone-powered handsets such as the Nokia Lumia 1020 outsold the iPhone for the first time.

As well as a very strong showing in Italy, Windows handsets, almost all of which are from Nokia, now make up one in 10 smartphone sales across the five major European markets. It is also gaining momentum in emerging markets too.

Android remains the dominant mobile operating system across Europe with a 71.9% market share - an increase of 4.2% compared with the same period last year.

In Britain, Windows accounts for just 11.4% of the market. Android is still the number one operating system with 58.4%, while BlackBerry now only has 3.1%. Apple’s iOS has dipped by 1.0 percentage point to 27.0%, although it is expected to strengthen at Christmas.

Dominic Sunnebo, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, said "August is traditionally a quiet month for Apple as consumers wait for the release of new models, and strong sales of the iPhone 5S and 5C at the end of September did not manage to make up for the lull. The full impact of the new iPhones will be seen at Christmas when iOS is expected to bounce back strongly in Britain, the US and Australia".
