On the back of a stellar show being put up through its recent IPO, Twitter has announced a new feature for users to improve the experience of using its service. This time, however, the feature is being made available for TweetDeck rather than Twitter for web. Called custom timelines, you will now be able to create a whole new timeline with tweets you care about. Brian Ellin writes on the Twitter developer blog that custom timeline is a whole different timeline you can create. You can name it and choose tweets you want to add to it, either manually or by using the API Twitter is offering you. Say you’re about to start watching Sachin Tendulkar’s final test match. You can create a cricket-centric timeline that will only surface relevant and noteworthy tweets around the topic.
Each of your timelines will have a Twitter page and will be public so other users can follow your curated timelines if it matches their interests. The best part is that since these custom timelines are part of the Twitter for Websites toolkit, you can embed them to your websites. So if you have a fashion blog, your custom timeline featuring designers can be put on to your website for real time updates. Of course, this feature is not available for the Twitter website as yet. To create custom timelines, you need to head on to TweetDeck. Once you create a custom timeline, you can drag and drop tweets onto it too. These custom timelines can be viewed on twitter.com too. Twitter has announced the custom timelines API beta along with the new feature as well. This will give you some interesting features like programming your custom timelines based on the logic you choose or building tools that can help users create their custom timeline better. Right now, the API is available only to select Twitter partners, but is open for more developers if they wish to try it out as well.
