iFixit teardown shows Xbox One just as easy to repair as PlayStation 4

Less than a day since it hit stores and iFixit already has a teardown of the Xbox One. The website has revealed that opening the console was quite easy and required very few tools. Overall, the console seems to be extremely easy to repair, and iFixit gave it an 8 out of 10. The biggest problem in the console was the fact that one has to void their warranty if they want to get to the HDD for replacement or upgrading purposes. The HDD itself is a Samsung 2.5-inch laptop drive spinning at 5400rpm. It is possibly using a proprietary file system. iFixit praised the console for its clean and no-nonsense modular design.

The PlayStation 4 got a similar treatment from the website earlier, and managed to score the same 8 out of 10. iFixit praised Sony’s console for its adhesive-free design, which makes disassembly and reassembly easy. It also has an easy-to-reach HDD, replacing which doesn't void the guarantee. On the flip side, the system's fan is buried quite a bit inside, so cleaning it requires a lot of disassembly. It also has a sharp midplane, which has the potential to cause injury during disassembly.

The PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One are part of the eighth generation of consoles. The former made its way to the US last week, while the latter was released in a number of countries today. While we don’t have any sales figures from Microsoft just yet, Sony has stated that it has sold more than a million PS4s on the first day alone.
