There has been a lot of talk of MediaTek’s new octa-core processor. The company, while officially introducing the new processor, said that it can make all eight cores function at the same time. New reports now suggest that the Taiwanese company will soon have a rival in that category, as Huawei is planning to launch its own rival processor soon. According to an unconfirmed translation by Giz China, the company’s president, Xu Xin Quan, via a post on his Weibo account, has said that next version of the Ascend P6, the P6S, will come with a new octa-core processor, which will be a major update to previous its quad-core K3V2 processor. He also said that the new 8-core Huawei chip will come with integrated 3G and is optimised for extended battery life.

Other features of the new processor as well as the smartphone it is to be housed in—the P6S—are yet to be revealed. While the quad-core K3V2 processor is slightly dated now compared to the current competition, there is currently no word on how the new Huawei SoC will be measuring up to the power of the MediaTek’s new processor. The latter, officially announced in July, came with the codename MT6592. While rival Samsung already has an Exynos 5 octa-core processor in the market, its SoC makes use of ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture. This is basically a combination of two quad-core processors; the first being a Cortex A15 chipset bunched in with a power-efficient Cortex A7 CPU. The architecture ensures that, at any one point in time, only one set of four cores will be active. The MediaTek processor, however, does not work in this way. The new SoC, owing to all eight cores functioning at the same time, should give better performance in terms of gaming as well as in other functions like Internet surfing, better video playback as well as with better battery performance. The company has also said that all eight cores can function well without the fear of overheating. Leaked AntuTu scores had revealed that the new chip scored around 30,000 points, slightly lesser than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800, which scored around 35,000 points in the benchmark. The SoC, however, fared better than the Snapdragon 600, which falls behind with a 25,000 point score. The chip is said to register clock speeds ranging from 1.7GHz to 2GHz and will be able to decode high-resolution 1080p videos at 30fps.
