Huawei Ascend P6 to get Android 4.4 KitKat in January

Google recently launched the latest member in its Nexus family, the Nexus 5, along with the much anticipated v4.4 KitKat flavour of Android. While manufacturers like Samsung and HTC have already announced plans to upgrade their flagships, Huawei has now joined the ranks to get the latest OS. The company, according to a post on Chinese web services company Baidu, has announced that the Ascend P6 will be getting the upgrade in January. Along with the latest Android OS, Huawei will also be introducing its new Emotion User Interface. The device, when it was unveiled in June, came with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean out-of-the-box. The handset was announced in India last month and comes with a price tag of Rs 29,999.

The latest announcement shows that the company has decided to jump over Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to give Ascend P6 users the latest Android experience. The decision to bump up the OS comes hot on the heels of the company announcement that it was working on a new octa-core processor for the successor of the P6, the Ascend P6S. Android 4.4, from what we know so far, comes with Project Svelte UI optimisation, bigger UI icons and gets rid of widgets from the app drawer. The OS also comes with a new Hangouts SMS/MMS/Gtalk unified hub, a new email app as well as a new Phone app with nearby search features. Android 4.4, according to Google, even lowers the hardware requirements for the new OS. With the announcement, Huawei becomes one of the first companies to bring the latest OS to its smartphones. So far, Android 4.4 has been available for the Nexus 5, both the 2012 and 2013 versions of Nexus 7 and Google’s Nexus 10 tablet. Motorola has also announced that the recently launched Moto X would be getting the new Android version in a “matter of weeks”. The Google Play editions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One are also slated to get the update soon, although there is still no word from either company about the exact release date.
