Google celebrates 50 years of Doctor Who with new Doodle

The hugely popular British sci-fi TV show Doctor Who has turned 50, and Google is celebrating the event with its latest doodle. The show, for those not in the know, records the adventures of a Time Lord, a time-travelling humanoid alien known as the Doctor. Users need to click the start arrow on the Doodle to choose one of eleven 2D-generated Doctors, each representing the actors that have played the show’s lead role over the last half century. Users will then have to guide them through isometric versions of Whovian environments to collect letters that spell “Google”. Blocking your path will be miniature versions of Daleks, Cybermen and Weeping Angels. If the player dies in the course of things, they will regenerate and take on the 2D avatar of another actor who portrayed the Time Lord, another nod to one of the many abilities of the Doctor. You can either choose to weave your way through the puzzle as Matt Smith, Tom Baker (with his trademark torso-length scarf) or Peter Davison. And if you don’t want them, rest assured that you still have eight other avatars to choose from. Once you have collected a letter, you need to return to TARDIS, the sentient time-travelling space ship that looks like a blue British Police box.

A straight line may be the shortest distance, but it is by no means the most interesting

The Doodle comes before the release of a special episode of the show, which is slated to air worldwide on November 23. The episode, titled “Day of the Doctor”, will see the return of one of the earlier actors who portrayed the Time Lord, David Tennant, the final episode for current Doctor Matt Smith and the first appearance for the next Doctor, the 12th in the series, Peter Capaldi. You can check out the trailer for the same on BBC’s official website.
