George Clooney hits out at Tesla amid growing concerns about Model S safety

One of the biggest names in Hollywood, George Clooney, has gone on record to say that he is not a fan of the electric-car company, Tesla Motors. In a recent interview with Esquire, Clooney said, “I had a Tesla. I was one of the first cats with a Tesla. But I’m telling you, I’ve been on the side of the road a while in that thing. And I said to them, ‘Look, guys, why am I always stuck on the side of the f**king road? Make it work, one way or another.’” The actor reportedly sold his Tesla Roadster last year. The model, which was sold at a base price of $109,000, was discontinued in 2011 after the company’s founder, Elon Musk, turned his attention to the more affordable sedan, the Model S. Clooney’s comments, however, add to the increasing number of problems faced by Tesla due to its sedan, with questions being raised regarding the safety of the car.

According to the New York Post, the stock prices of the company went down last week after reports came in that some of Tesla’s Model S electric sedans caught fire, leading many to questioned the safety of the model’s battery. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to the Daily Tech, has decided to look into the cases, after the third Model S was reported catching fire in under a two-month period.

Special focus is being placed on the fact that in the Model S, the battery is placed near the underside, making it an easy target when striking debris or hitting pavement, increasing the risk of a fire. Musk, according to reports, defended the safety of the Model S, saying that the result of one particular fire, “could have been far worse” had the same accident occurred with a “conventional gasoline car.” Tesla’s stock is currently down by 17 percent over the last five days, and now stands at $144.70 (Rs 9150 approx). The drop in the stock, however, is counter-balanced by the fact that Tesla saw an overall 327-percent stock rise this year.
