EE launches 300Mbps LTE Advanced 4G in London

Mobile network EE has launched its LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) high-speed network in the UK, which will bring potential data transfer speeds of up to 300Mb/s, although it starts as a trial limited to a small area of London.

EE became the first mobile network to offer publicly-accessible Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G connectivity in the UK when it launched its new network last year. Prices were high and data allowances low, but for those who needed additional speed from their mobiles it was the only option. Now, however, competing networks have launched their own high-speed LTE services and EE is looking to up the ante.

The Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) standard is a true 4G service, and provides considerably improved data rates compared to the network's current LTE service. Where EE's current network tops out at 150Mb/s, the company has said its LTE-A network will offer up to 300Mb/s, with the potential to grow closer to the technology's theoretical peak limit of 1,000Mb/s in the future.

There are a few catches, however. First, there are no smartphones, dongles or tablets compatible with LTE-A on the UK market at present; second, EE plans to make the service available to businesses in the 'Tech City' area of London first, with public access to come later. The company has also yet to confirm whether the doubling of speed will include a doubling of data transfer allowances - without which users could quickly exceed their contract terms and run up an extremely large bill in excess data fees.
