Developer DICE has said that the multiplayer servers for Battlefield 4 are suffering denial of service attacks which are leaving players unable to connect.
The newest title in the company's Battlefield series, which has exchanged the tongue-in-cheek attitude last seen in the Battlefield: Bad Company spin-offs for a grittier take on modern warfare, the PC version of Battlefield 4 was recently updated with a 1GB patch to improve stability. Over the weekend, however, gamers found that even with the patch installed they were being dropped from games or even being unable to connect at all.
The official word from DICE is that an unknown entity has been attacking the multiplayer servers in what is known as a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. Designed to prevent access to a server, a DDoS attack involves sending millions of requests to a server from a wide range of machines - typically home computers infected with malware that puts them under the attacker's control, forming a botnet.
"We are currently experiencing attacks on our infrastructure that are impacting online gameplay on BF4 PC," a company spokesperson has explained. "We are working on mitigating actions".
"We are being targeted by a DDoS, but working on fixing it ASAP," another DICE employee confirmed in a message to fans. "I'm sorry somebody is ruining your and my day. Rest assured we are doing our best to mitigate the situation, though".
The attacks are thought to only be affecting the PC version of the game, with console releases connecting to different servers.
