Apple may be looking at offering hardware repairs for the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c across official stores, according to 9to5Mac. The report, referring to “sources with knowledge of the upcoming initiative” claims that Apple Stores will be able to replace several parts of the newest iPhones on-site. This will negate the need for the company to fully replace the models that are damaged or facing other problems, as was Apple’s policy in the past. The source claims that Apple will be giving its stores special machinery to replace the touchscreens of both the devices. The machines in question will be used specifically to calibrate the displays. The replacements will set users back an average of $149 (Rs 9,330 approx) for each device, a price point that is definitely more affordable for the company than the cost incurred to completely replace a device with a damaged or cracked screen. The Apple stores will also be able replace the volume buttons, vibrating motor, rear camera and speaker system of the new devices. While the store will be able to replace the traditional Home button in the 5c, the Touch ID-based button of the 5s might not be part of the offering.
Apple Retail Stores could soon offer on-site repairs for the iPhone 5s and 5c
The source states that if the user’s 5c or 5s is under AppleCare warranty, the part replacement costs will be waived. If the iPhone is not under warranty, there will be fees incurred for individual part replacements. A battery replacement, for example will set users back $79 (Rs 4,940 approx), while a new 5c Home button will cost $29 (Rs 1,810 approx). The time frame needed for screen replacements in the Apple Stores might range from 30 minutes to an hour.
There has not been any word from Apple about this, though. The move, however, makes sense, as this will not only save the customer time and money, but will save the company the money needed to produce replacement iPhones and handle the entire process. There is also no word on whether these facilities will be limited to the US or not, although the source claims that certain Apple Stores will be getting these machines soon. The company was last seen offering display replacements for the iPhone 5 at retail locations back in June. At the time, reports claimed that the move would net Apple an additional profit of over $1 billion. India currently does not have an official Apple Store, although there are a number of authorised resellers spread out across the nation.
