If you’re looking out for a new smartphone, chances are that there will be a lot of research time dedicated to figuring out what’s good and what’s not in each of the top models out in the market. Accommodating both aspiring as well as existing users, Fixya, a troubleshooting website, has analysed a mammoth 13,037 fix-it requests about four leading smartphones, namely the Samsung Galaxy S4, Apple’s iPhone 5s, the Moto X and the HTC One, since their launches this year.A brief overview reveals that the Galaxy S4 users are experiencing overheating issues, the Moto X is leaving users frustrated with the lack of storage space while the HTC One users find that the camera is just not up to scratch. While iPhone 5s users also complained about specific issues, the Apple smartphone was found to have the least amount of problems overall and gets the highest score in Fixya's charts. It must be noted that the iPhone 5s was latest to the market among the contenders. Let’s take a look at each of the smartphones mentioned: Samsung Galaxy S4:
Quite a few issues, say users
Complaints of the Galaxy S4 overheating number the most according to the report, with 25 percent of users raising queries about the same. The report states that “so much horsepower under the engine in such a tiny device” leads to the phone becoming hot to the touch when used for a considerable amount of time. 20 percent of the user base has raised the issue of the battery draining out too quickly. The report states that, “The S4 has a tendency of undergoing severe battery drain over the course of a day, causing the battery to require a recharge before the day is through.” 20 percent have also complained that the display is relatively darker than other devices. This includes reading text, looking at bright pictures and running apps. Samsung's current flagship was launched in India in April for Rs 41, 500. Too little storage for the user's liking
The majority of Moto X users, around 30 percent, have complained about the lack of storage place, and the lack of a microSD card just compounds the issue. While the handset gives users the option of storing in the cloud, the report states that, “it is not always convenient or possible to access cloud data, and it can add to usage costs, especially when you’re on roaming.” Screen quality is another issue raised by 20 percent of users. The display, according to the report, “falls short of the standards set by many other competitive devices. Items such as text pixelation and saturation (overly bright colors) are common threads for the device, and relate directly to how users view basic media like text on web pages as well as rich media such as pictures and graphics when using the phone." 20 percent have a bone to pick with the camera, and the source addresses this by saying that the Moto X “doesn’t appear to offer the high-end quality performance expected out of the top phones. Photos taken in seemingly perfect light will sometimes have strange, pixelated shapes in the photo caused by a lackluster sensor, and other times the phone’s automatic focusing will distort the photo and blur areas seemingly at random." The Moto X was unveiled in August and you can check out our specifications review to know more about it. HTC One:
Too much power, too little battery!
A huge 30 percent have complained about the battery life, while 20 percent find issue with the camera quality and audio issues. In case of the former, users claim that the device takes too long to recharge. The report winds up the issue by saying that it is a challenge for the battery to handle a big screen and a fast processor. On the camera front, the report says that users have a lot of difficulty shooting pictures in the middle of the day with photos coming out extremely saturated. However, night photographs appear to come out much better." Audio-wise, FixYa says that some users have reported “hearing a subtle hiss in the background while making phone calls and (less so) when listening to music on the device via the speaker system. However, it does not appear to affect the other person on the line."
The One finally saw an official launch in India back in May with a price tag of Rs 42, 900. Check out our review of the HTC One to know what the Korean manufacturer has packed into its flagship.Apple iPhone 5S:
Fingerprint protection could be a problem
Most users who have picked up Apple’s current flagship offering are likely to complain about battery life, finds the report. While battery life has been an issue for many existing Apple users, a new concern being raised by 25 percent of 5s concerns the fingerprint password. It is not exactly clear how fingerprint access is a problem, though, as users have the option of using a code instead.
Fixya, in its reports, has said that, "there doesn’t appear to be a widespread issue with the passwords not working or anything of the sort." 15 percent have also complained of apps crashing. While talking about screen issues, the report states that "users do complain about the phone occasionally crashing and being forced to reboot due to screen freeze." The 5s, along with the 5c, were offically launched in India earlier this month with a price tag of Rs 53,500 and Rs 41,900 respectively.
