Xbox One Kinect drops minimum distance limit to 1.4m

A leaked setup guide for the Xbox One Kinect sensor suggests that improvements in the camera have reduced the required distance between the player and the Kinect unit to just 1.4 metres.

The original Kinect, built for the Xbox 360, is designed to track the user through 3D space and allow the control of games without a traditional gamepad or joystick, but it requires the user position themselves around two metres away from the device. With the system also requiring a furniture-free zone between the user and the sensor, it was largely unsuitable for use in smaller rooms.

Microsoft had promised that the redesigned Kinect sensor bundled with every Xbox One would improve this, but stopped short of providing firm details. A leaked copy of the Xbox One Kinect setup manual has appeared on the Neogaf forums to fill in the blanks, however, suggesting that the new sensor will drop around 40cm from the space requirement.

The Xbox One Kinect sensor will apparently require an absolute minimum of 1.4 metres space in order to accurately detect a person's movement - compared to 1.8m to 2m for the original Xbox 360 Kinect. The manual also suggests that the sensor unit itself will need to be positioned at a minimum height of 0.6m and a maximum height of 1.8m from the ground.

The next-generation Kinect platform should also bring other improvements, including the ability to isolate individual voices even when several people are speaking at the same time, a higher resolution and even being able to pick up a player's heart rate from two metres away. The Xbox One with Kinect launches in the UK on the 22nd of November.
