Rumour round-up: iPad mini 2

Rumour round-up: iPad mini 2

There has been a lot of talk about Apple’s new iPad offerings, with the new additions to the line-up expected to include a new edition of the iPad mini. With Apple recently announcing that it will be holding an event on October 22, the rumour mills have been grinding away that the new iDevice may be officially unveiled by the end of the month.

While the configuration, specifications and features have still not officially been announced, a considerable number of leaks have helped to paint a decent picture of what we can expect from the new mini tablet. We took a look at everything we have heard so far and piled it together to show you what we know about Apple’s new iPad mini 2. Design:From what we have heard, it looks like the new iDevice will come in a similar or identical size and shape as its predecessor. Just to put it into perspective, the old iPad mini came with a 7.9-inch display with a pixel resolution of 768x1024 and a pixel density of 162ppi. In terms of dimensions, the old mini measured 200x134.7x7.2mm and weighed in at 312g.

The new iPad mini 2 could come with a different colour scheme

The major difference in the new version, however, could be the colour scheme. Leaked images have shown the new tablet in a “Space Grey” avatar, which is also one of the three colour options that the new iPhone 5s comes in. There is no word yet if Apple is planning to come up with a golden or silver version of the tablet, though. Display: The biggest complaint most users of the original iPad mini had was that it did not come with a relatively high resolution display. Given that the earlier generation iPad 4 and the iPhone 5 both came with a high resolution Retina display; this disparity seemed all the more disappointing.

This time around, Apple seems to have heeded the pleas of its users, with reports suggesting that the new iDevice will come with a Retina display. While the resolution may be bumped up, everything we have heard suggests that the display size will remain unchanged.

The new mini 2 may come with a upgraded Retina display

Specs sheet: We don’t really have many details about what the iPad mini 2 will come sporting under the hood. It is, however, assumed that Apple will pack in the latest A7 processor into the new tablet. The new processor was last seen powering the iPhone 5s, and is the world’s first 64-bit desktop-style architecture for mobile devices. There have also been reports that the camera may be due for an upgrade, bringing the same up to 8-megapixels. That will put it in the same range as the iPhone 5s, optics-wise. It should be noted that this is the first time that we have heard of Apple bumping up the camera on its tablets to match the one seen on its phone range.

The upgrade could also mean that the company may bring the improved iSight camera to the mini 2, although there are no concrete reports to corroborate this. It is also thought that the new iDevice will come with the same Touch ID fingerprint scanner that the 5s sports.

Release date: There has been a lot of speculation that Apple may be pushing the launch of the iPad mini 2 to the first half of 2014. This, according to reports, is due to the company facing trouble while procuring a key component in the iDevice, which may be delaying production of the same. Another report from Reuters has now said that there have been delays in the production of Retina display, which corroborates the 2014 release date we have been hearing about. An intriguing piece of information that has popped up suggests that Apple may be working on two variants of the iPad mini 2, one with the Retina display, and one without. This could be good news for users, as this increases the chances of seeing a lesser priced, Retina-less iPad mini 2 hitting the market this year, with the full blown model coming out next year. There is no official statement to back this speculation, though, so it could very well be that we might see only one version of the iDevice coming to the market. Earlier reports had pegged a release date for the mini 2 in the month of October or November. This estimation makes sense because that is almost a year from when the original mini was launched. There is a lot of talk about the October 22 event being held for this announcement. Apple, however, is still being tight lipped about what it has in mind, making it difficult to say for sure. While the launch date may be a few weeks away, there is still no word on just how much the mini 2 will cost.

The iPad mini, when it was launched in India last year, came with a price tag of Rs 21,900. The launch price of the new mini 2, however, may be higher, given that we are expecting better features this time around. Overall, the slew of leaks surrounding the new iPad mini 2 paints a pretty good picture. If Apple does manage to pack in all the speculated features, the new iDevice may just pan out to be a really good tablet that users will look forward to picking up.
