Nokia has now introduced a new app as an add-on to its Glance Screen feature. The company first introduced the feature with the Lumia 925. Glance essentially allowed users to double-tap to wake the device, though the company has been steadily working on it. While the feature normally shows a clock when the phone display is turned off, the Finnish company previously added a “Peek” feature to let you wave to activate your device. The company has now released a beta version app of what it calls Glance Background, which will allow some Lumia users to set a background image on the Glance screen. Nokia Sleeping Screen was a distinctive part of the company’s older Symbian devices, and the Glance Background beta seems to have a lot in common with the older feature. Users can now select up to four images to rotate as the Glance background and choose from either pre-loaded images or their own.

The feature even comes with a basic photo editor packed with pre-set effects and the ability to colourise images and zoom in to the images. The set up, from what can be seen, seems pretty basic and is really just an additional Windows Phone app that you can install. The company has said that Glance Background is compatible with Nokia Lumia 1020, 925, 920, 820, 720 and 620. The catch, though, is that users need to have the latest Amber update with General Distribution Release 2 (GDR2). The Lumia 625 and the Lumia 520, however, aren’t compatible because they don’t support the Glance screen feature.
The company has cautioned users that they might face some issues with the app as it is still in the beta stage. These issues could include the screen flickering and an increase in the power consumption. Users who don’t mind these glitches can head on over to the Windows Phone Store to download Glance Background.
