Google’s next offering to the smartphone market, the Nexus 5, has been generating a lot of news and an increasing number of leaks have been helping to paint a pretty clear picture of the new handset. Any gaps in that picture may now have been filled by a new seven minute video walkthrough of a Nexus 5 prototype. The leak appeared online via smartphones.sfr.fr. The video seems to have been shot on October 9, at least according to the date seen on the lockscreen. And the device definitely looks like a prototype, owing to the lack of any Nexus branding on the back. The video, however, reveals a lot in terms of hardware and software. The video of the prototype starts with a slightly curved design that seems similar to the latest Nexus 7 recently launched. The new handset will be made by LG and may feature a rubberised back similar to the Nexus 7. The video also shows two speakers on either side of the microUSB port, which unfortunately still seems to be the regular USB 2.0 version. The speaker placement hints at the possibility of stereo speakers. You can have a look at the prototype for yourself in the video below:
The video goes over the new Android KitKat design as well, which seems to have gotten rid of the Holo blue design first seen in Android 3.0 Honeycomb. The Wi-Fi, Clock and Battery symbols all seem to be white in colour. It should be noted, though, that while the Android version clearly states Key Lime Pie, this means that it is an older build of the new OS, since the new version was called this in-house until September. The latest leak shows a build that is even older than the one we saw last. Features like the transparent notification bar, the camera shortcut on the lockscreen, the new dialer, app drawer and Search app icons are all missing while Google Photos and even the YouTube app seem to be older versions. A few things are worth noticing, though. The messenger app is no where to be seen, adding further evidence to Hangouts taking over the show in the versions to follow. While the video does not reveal much in the way of leaks, it is still noteworthy because it gives use the clearest look so far at the new Nexus phone. All said, it looks like Google may be planning to announce the device soon, although there is still no fixed date on when that will happen. Earlier reports, though, have hinted at an October 15 launch date, but there is no confirmation on the same yet.
