Microsoft details Windows 8.1 apps ahead of launch

Microsoft will be rolling out its latest OS, Windows 8.1, on October 18. While the update comes with a host of new features and improvements, it looks like the company wants to talk about the revamp it has given to many of its built-in apps. An official blog post from the company now comes with details about how a few of them will work for the user.

A completely new app that software maker has revealed details is Movie Moments. As the name suggests, the new app allows users to quickly share video stories with effects, music and short captions. Users can also trim the video they want to share directly from the app. The company’s Movie Maker feature seen on desktops, however, seems to offer more options for simple video editing.

The company has also revamped the photos app. While the earlier version came with Facebook and Flickr integration, Windows 8.1 will be dropping that in favor of some improvements to editing. Users can now select auto fix for a selection of different corrections. Also packed in are features like manual cropping, red-eye removal, re-touch and basic contrast and brightness adjustment. Users can also enhance the colours on their photos by picking a particular area that can be lightened or darkened according to their preference.

Windows 8.1, apart from photo editing, also tweaks the camera apps. The new built-in app can be accessed through a swipe on the lockscreen, similar to what you see on an iPhone or on most Android devices. You can also take photos while capturing video content. Microsoft has also worked in a panorama feature using its native Photosynth technology to stitch multiple images together. The pan shot, once it is complete, can be synced to SkyDrive and accessible on the Internet.

The camera app also supports a new Photo Loop feature, which seems to bear some resemblance with BlackBerry 10’s photo rewind. The feature essentially allows the camera to shoot a series of photos one second before and one second after the shutter button is pushed.

Last on the list of revamps is the software maker’s Fresh Paint drawing app for the new OS. The revamp comes with improved stylus pressure support and rendering of watercolours. Microsoft has said that the updated apps will go live in the Windows Store on October 18 when the new OS officially rolls out. Users wanting to get Movie Moments, though, need to visit the Windows Store to download the same.
