Jony Ive designs one-off Leica M camera for charity

How would you like to own a camera designed by the man behind Apple’s iOS 7 look? Jony Ive has created the Leica M camera that is going to be auctioned off in November for an AIDS charity. The catch here is that it is to be a one-of-a-kind camera designed with the sole aim of raising money for the fund.

The camera features a laser machined aluminum body and an anodized alminum outer shell, Leica says. The Leica M has a full-format CMOS sensor, high performance processor and new Leica APO-Summicron – M 50mm f/2 ASPH lens to go along with that fine body. The company says that Jony Ive and Industrial Designer Marc Newson made a total of 561 models and nearly 1,000 prototype parts in 85 days to finally come up with the final product. This unique Leica M camera will be going off for auction at Sotheby’s on November 23, proceeds from which will go to (RED), a charity by U2 singer Bono to fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The special edition camera was not all the duo designed. 40 other items that celebrate the “best of design and innovation” will go on auction at Sotheby’s for the cause.

The duo, in an interview with Vanity Fair described the slightly difficult task of two long time friends with diverse design tastes sitting together to collaborate over items for charity. "I found it a very odd and unusual thing to put this amount of love and energy into one thing, where you are only going to make one," Ive said. "But isn't it beautiful?"

As far as the camera goes, besides all the effort put in by Ive and Newson, Apple lent them some 55 engineers at various points of time, resulting in 2,149 hours of work. It’s no wonder then, that Ive expects the sale of the camera to raise some $6 million for Bono’s (RED) charity.
