Is Apple Maps about to get public transit information?

Surprising as it may sound, Apple’s much-troubled Maps app still doesn’t offer public transit directions. Compare it to the amount of people who depend on Google Maps for directions on public transport and you will begin to see the problem. This is set to change, though. A job listing was spotted on Apple’s website, looking for people to join the Public Transit team of the Maps division. The listing that has since been pulled off the website was spotted by MacRumors. Apple is seeking to fill engineering positions related to public transit within the company. The listing showed Apple is on the look out for a Maps Public Transit Engineering Manager and a Public Transit Software Engineer who will join the Maps team to work on building and improving a Transit Routing platform “at a massive scale.”

Public Transit soon?

Public transit on Apple Maps soon?

“As a member of the Transit Routing team, you will work on one of the most anticipated features of Apple Maps. You will design and implement functionality that will be used by millions of users worldwide,” the listing read. Apple had reportedly posted other transit positions on the website recently as well. Apple, in the recent past, has picked up mapping companies with special focus on transit like HopStop and Embark. When Apple released its Maps service with iOS 6 last year it faced a lot of criticism over issues like muddled maps and general lack of information. Lack of public transit information was also one point for which Maps came under fire. Apple users will heave a sigh of relief the day public transit gets added to the catalogue of services Maps offers since it will also mean less dependency on Google Maps.
