India grey market sales of the iPhone 5s, 5c hold steady before November 1 launch

Apple’s official announcement that it will be bringing the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c to India on November 1 has caused a great deal of excitement. One factor, though, that may dampen the enthusiasm is the lack of an official price tag. While the international pricing is known, just how much the Indian buyer will have to shell out for the new iDevices is not known. Not officially, anyway. Both the new handsets recently appeared online for pre-order. While the 16GB variant of the iPhone 5c was listed at approximately Rs 43,860, the iPhone 5s comes with a price tag of approximately Rs 55,730, for the 16GB model. While the online prices are pretty high, the grey market pricing is more palatable.Market sources told us that the 16GB version of the iPhone 5c is being sold within the range of Rs 38,000 to Rs 40,000. The 32GB variant of the 5c is, unfortunately, not available now. The 5s, on the other hand, is being priced at a much higher Rs 55,000, for the 16GB variant. The 32GB variant, according to our sources, is priced at Rs 61,000.

The new iPhone 5s is selling better on the grey market

An enquiry into the sales of each model was revealing because it seems like the 5s is doing better than the 5c. The difference of sales in terms of numbers between the two models could not be pinpointed, unfortunately. This trend, however, seems to match other markets as well, where the iPhone 5s is reportedly more popular than the so-called budget iPhone. In terms of colour preferences for the 5s, it looks like the grey avatar of the new device is the most popular among users, with the second favourite being the gold version. The iPhone 5c, on the other hand, had a lot of buyers picking up the blue coloured variant. One dealer told us that the pink coloured 5c was also doing quite well. Most dealers have said that they were able to get the new devices soon after the international launch. While the overall sales since then could not be validated, sources claimed to have sold anywhere between seven to 10 new iPhones per day. That translates to around 200 units being sold over a month. The number indicates that the overall sales of the new iPhones in the grey market seems to be holding steady. The break-up between the two models could not be ascertained. While the numbers are still hazy, our sources were willing to take a guess at the price range Apple may launch the new iPhones. While the 16GB model for the iPhone 5c could fall in the mid Rs 30,000 range, the 5s might set users back by Rs 48,000, again for the 16GB model.
