Google doodles to celebrate 216th anniversary of first parachute descent

It’s time for another mini-history lesson by Google. The company has doodled to commemorate the 216th anniversary of the world’s first parachute descent. The doodle is an animated, interactive one, where you have to control the parachute using the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard. The parachute ascends into the sky and starts to descend rapidly, during the descent you must control the parachute and move through clouds, landing either on tree tops or in the sea.

Inside the animated parachute stands the man of the hour, André-Jacques Garnerin, the Frenchman who made the first parachute descent on October 22, 1797. Garnerin hopped onto a basket with which was attached a silk parachute to make the descent. He rode the parachute to 3,000 feet above Parc Monceau in Paris. He survived a messy landing to become the world’s first parachutist. Garnerin was born on January 31, 1769 and studied physics before he became an inspector with the French army in 1793. He made many parachuting trips for exhibitions. At one point of time, Garnerin bettered his 3,000 feet jump with a 8,000 feet one.

For all his feats, Garnerin surprisingly lost his life in an utmost earthly manner. In 1823, while he was building his next balloon, a falling beam crushed Garnerin, bringing his hopes of yet another parachuting adventure to an end. This interactive doodle is a great follow up to one released to celebrate Google’s own 15th birthday. The doodle featured a piñata that users had to smash open to get candies. It was a scored doodle, making it all the more fun to play with, while competing with friends.
