Samsung has confirmed that the upcoming Android 4.3 update for its Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4 smartphones, and Galaxy Note 2 phablet will add support for its Galaxy Gear smartwatch - or at least once network providers have approved it and pushed it to customers' handsets.
Galaxy Gear, the Android-powered smartwatch launched at this year's IFA show, is currently only compatible with one or two handsets, including the Galaxy Note 3. Unlike competing devices like Sony's Smartwatch 2, you can't pair it to any other manufacturer's devices, and even Samsung handset owners have to wait for an update in order to get connected.
Unfortunately, that could be a significant length of time, as Samsung has only provided a vague end of October window for the compatibility update. As it is baked into the Android 4.3 operating system, it has to get approval from network providers before customers can install it - a process which can takes months.
Other Samsung handsets will be getting a separate update to add Gear compatibility, including the Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy Mega and Galaxy S4 Zoom, but won't get Android 4.3 just yet - if at all.
"Extending the Galaxy Gear compatibility to more Galaxy devices reflects our deep commitment to continuing to deliver our consumers enriched mobile experiences,” JK Shin, Samsung's CEO, said of the announcement. "Through a significant effort to enhance and enrich Samsung Galaxy experience, Samsung continues to empower our users to have smart freedom in their mobile lives with Galaxy Gear".
