Ford's SYNC AppLink for voice activated smartphone apps coming to India in 2014

Ford, at the ongoing Mobile Developer Summit 2013 in Bangalore, has now announced that it will be launching its SYNC AppLink in the country by next year. The feature basically gives drivers voice control technology for smartphone apps. This will give Ford drivers the convenience of accessing content and information on-the-go. The revamped feature was last seen rolling out for the Eurpoean market. SYNC AppLink allows for greater communication between smartphone apps and AppLink-equipped vehicles via voice commands. Customers can also control applications right from the driver’s seat courtesy the feature’s voice activated connectivity system. The list of supported apps is also considerable, with ESPNcricinfo, MapmyIndia, burrp!, Glympse and TuneIn Radio all being featured.

The company has said that the new technology was first integrated globally on the Ford EcoSport. There is no word yet whether the Indian variant of the model will be the first to get the technology as well. There is also no word about which platforms the new system will support, although it can be assumed that both the dominant iOS and Android platforms will be in the loop.

The company is also keen for app developers to come on board to add new applications. Through its Global Development Program, Ford is inviting software developers to come up with voice-activated mobile apps for its vehicle line-up. More information about AppLink’s application programming interface can be found on the company’s Developer Program website. The developer site, from what can be seen, comes with the standard online forums to discuss app development and related issues. Once submitted to Ford, an app will be tested and reviewed for usability on App-Link enabled vehicles. Once the company works out a distribution license with the developer, the app will be rolled out for customers. Developers, according to the company, will have a wide range of categories to work in.

So far, Ford’s in-car connectivity systems, developed by Microsoft, has hit more than 7 million vehicles, and the company estimates that at least 9 million new customers will be added to the list worldwide by the end of 2015. There is no specific date for when the feature will be available or which model cars the new system will be featured in.
