Elon Musk wants to make James Bond's submarine car a reality

Elon Musk is hands down one of the coolest, most eccentric person of our times. The CEO of Tesla Motors has a litany of crazy achievements to his name and now Musk has actually purchased James Bond’s transformable submarine car from The Spy Who Loved Me and plans to make it work like the movie depicted it. The car-turned-submarine from the Bond classic was sold at a high-profile auction back in September. The identity of the million-dollar man who picked up the piece of James Bond history was kept secret for about a month or so. This week, however, Tesla Motors confirmed that the secret buyer was none other than Musk.

In the film, the car, modeled off a Lotus sports car is able to turn into a submarine underwater. However, that bit was just a piece of cinematic fiction that Musk was unaware of. "I was disappointed to learn that it can't actually transform," he said in a statement provided by Tesla Motors. So, what does one do now? Any other person would have probably submitted themselves to fate and let the car hang around as a collector’s item. Not Musk though. The Chief Product Architect (he's the CEO too) of Tesla Motors has decided he’s going to actually make the car function as it was supposed to in the film. "What I'm going to do is upgrade it with a Tesla electric powertrain and try to make it transform for real,” he said. “It was amazing as a little kid in South Africa to watch James Bond in The Spy Who Loved Me drive his Lotus Esprit off a pier, press a button and have it transform into a submarine underwater,” he told USA Today in an interview. Even as Roger Moore, playing James Bond in the movie, drives the car off the cliff, it sprouts fins and propellers to make it move around in water. This may not be too difficult a feat for Musk, who is also the head of SpaceX. To those who doubt that Musk is capable of transforming the Bond Lotus Esprit, just remember that he is supposedly the inspiration for Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark in Iron Man and the same man who has built a lab inspired by that superhero movie to build rockets.
