Dell XPS 13 and XPS 15 updated with Haswell CPUs and high-resolution screens

Dell has updated its XPS laptop range with new Intel Haswell processors, higher resolution screens and NFC connectivity.

The XPS 13, which is already one of our favourite Ultrabooks, improves its 13.3in Full HD display by adding touch sensitivity and improving viewing angles to a whopping 178 degrees. It's all protected by Corning Gorilla Glass NBT, so shouldn't scratch easily.

A choice of 4th Generation Core i3, i5 and i7 processors will be available, along with various memory and solid state storage configurations, in the same diminutive 6-19mm chassis as the existing model. Weight remains at an eminently portable 1.36kg.

We were told that the upgraded hardware would be available with either Windows 8.1 or with Ubuntu Linux as part of Dell's "operation Sputnik" XPS 13 Developer edition, although have no firm dates or prices yet.

The larger XPS 15 gains a more significant set of upgrades, headlined by the world's first 15.6in, 3,200x1,800 QHD+ resolution touch display. It too will have a choice of 4th Generation Core processors, including the most powerful mobile quad-core i7 chips Intel produces, which can be paired with dedicated Nvidia graphics and up to 16GB of RAM. Storage options include a 1TB mechanical hard disk paired with 32GB of SSD cache.

The laptop itself now looks much more like the XPS 13, with a thinner body that ditches the internal optical drive of its predecessor. You'll still find four USB ports, a full-size HDMI output, SD card reader and mini Displayport, so the downsize hasn't simplified connectivity too drastically. There's even NFC built into the wrist rest to make it easier to pair Bluetooth headphones or other gadgets.

It certainly felt just like the XPS 13 in use, albeit a little larger and heavier. We'll have to wait until we get a review unit into the Labs to bring you a proper verdict, but the huge screen resolution looked stunning during our short time at the announcement event.

Both new laptops are due to go on sale directly through Dell in the coming months, but company representatives couldn't give us a more specific date, or expected pricing.
