Bose takes on Sonos with SoundTouch streaming system

Bose has unveiled its new music streaming system, SoundTouch, which will sync up to all of its future products, as well as a series of Airplay-enabled speakers which it unveiled at an event in New York this week, which Expert Reviews attended.

They are the SoundTouch 30 (£599.95) – the flagship model aimed at the living room – which weighs just 9lb and comes equipped with a sub-woofer; the SoundTouch 20 (£349.95) for second spaces (although it still packs a punch) and the SoundTouch portable (£349.95), which is significantly lighter and smaller than its stay-at-home counterparts, and comes with a rechargeable ion battery.

Each device can be controlled via an app on your smartphone or tablet, which is free to download. The SoundTouch app, which is available on iOS, Android, Mac and Windows (sorry Windows Phone hogs, this doesn’t include you), contains a simple-to-use interface and comes with a ‘presets’ system which lets you assign playlists, singular tracks and radio stations for one-touch access.

Bose also unveiled the SoundTouch controller, an elegantly-designed circular affair that allows you to control each device without using the app. There’s no Spotify support currently, however, the system will only work with older Bose products via an amp adaptor which is expected to land next year.

The system will put the American audio brand in direct competition with Sonos, which has dominated the DIY multiroom wireless audio space for some time now.
