Asda is to trial a 3D printing service in its UK stores. The British division of the Walmart supermarket chain intends the new service to allow shoppers to scan and recreate a huge variety of items in ceramic.
The whole surface area of an object is scanned using multiple cameras in a process which takes around two minutes. The shape is then created in 3D by spraying ceramic fluid in thin layers to build a solid object.
According to a report in The Guardian the new printing service will be launched on the 15th of October in the company's York branch.
Should the trial be successful, the retailer indicated it would roll out the service across the UK.
"Nothing smaller than a shoe can be scanned by the system, which should prevent issues around the possible replication of banned items such as the 3D printed gun," a spokesperson told the Guardian.
In a company blog post, Asda said that the service could be used to create a 3D printed miniature version of you and your family while you’re doing your weekly shop.
"Just step into the scanner and we create a detailed digital model which is then sent away to be printed in ceramic.
"Anything can be scanned, including people, pets and even cars, and the models can be produced in full-colour, white or a bronze-style coating."
Prices are set to start at £40.
