Apple is back in the news, this time with more developments being reported about its new tablet offerings. The new models, titled the iPad 5 and the iPad mini 2 respectively, might come with 8-megapixel rear cameras, according to KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The analyst has also said that both tablets could be launched in the fourth quarter of 2013, according to Apple Insider. The KGI report, according to the source, states that the cameras will come with an updated five-element lens provided by Taiwanese manufacturers Genius and Largan. The two firms are also responsible for the optics currently used in Apple's latest iPhone 5s and 5c.The new sensor modules will be provided by Sony, allowing Apple to bump up the resolution from the earlier 5-megapixel seen in fourth-generation iPad and iPad mini. The boosted specifications, if true, will be a first for the company. In the past, the iPad maker has traditionally stuck to packing its tablets with optics that are relatively lower in resolution to the flagship iPhone. While the kind of module has not been clearly spoken about, the source speculates that the new offerings will come with a backside illuminated component, possibly with larger 1.5-micron pixels, similar to what is seen in the iPhone 5s.
Apple's new iPads may come with 8-megapixel cameras
Kuo, while talking about this, has reported that Apple may rely on camera upgrades to help its iPad line-up stand out from the competition. Retina display, which has helped Apple stand out in the tablet market in the past, has been effectively integrated by a number of other manufacturers. The most recent case seen is Amazon’s new 7-inch and 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX tablets, packing a pixel density of 323 ppi and 339 ppi respectively. This is a fair bit higher than the 264 ppi and 163 ppi currently provided by Apple’s fourth-generation iPad and iPad mini respectively. The analyst has also stated that the company will initially roll out 1.2 million units of the iPad 5 in the third quarter and 10.5 million units in the fourth quarter. In comparison, the iPad mini 2 will not see any units shipped out in the third quarter and 2.1 million units in the fourth quarter. This could lead to severe supply constraints for the iPad mini 2, if it is launched this year.
