Airtel Digital TV has managed to team up with Twitter in order to let Indian viewers tweet while they watch television shows, right from their TV sets. This new “watch-and-tweet” function is a first of its kind for DTH operators in India.Tech in Asia has reported that Airtel has already integrated Twitter with its digital offerings and will let users tweet regarding shows on selected channels. The feature has already been launched for Airtel TV subscribers today. It comes as a no-extra charge feature for subscribers. Jana Messerschmidt, Twitter’s Vice President of Business Development and Platforms, said, “We are excited to see partners like Airtel innovating with our platform and helping their audience connect with the TV programs they love.”
Social TV with Twitter comes to India
The Twitter service will be powered by Bangalore-based Brizz TV and will be available to all Airtel Digital users, regardless of which set-top box they’re using. Users simply have to press the green coloured button on their remote controls to get started with tweeting. While Airtel and Twitter have not disclosed the business model they will be following, Tech in Asia believes it could be possible Airtel will stream targeted Twitter ads and marketing promotions to its subscribers. Airtel is already supposed to have 8.5 million subscribers by the end of June 2013 and has 373 channels including 17 HD and five interactive ones. Twitter has clearly shifted focus to television – and this time in India too – with its IPO fast approaching. The chatter about television shows has never been higher on Twitter and the micro-blogging website has even teamed up with Nielsen ratings recently to come up with social television ratings for shows trending on the site.
