Acer has revealed the C270, the latest in the company's range of Chrome OS-powered Chromebook laptops which promises improved performance and a longer lasting battery over the outoging C7 Chromebook.
These improvements are chiefly due to the presence of Intel Haswell internals. The C270 uses a Celeron 2955U CPU, which is based on the same architecture as the more powerful 4th Generation Core processors, which should result in around eight and a half hours from a single charge.
Roughly 30 per cent slimmer than the C7, the C270 is 19mm thick and weighs just 1.3kg, which would be enough to put it into Ultrabook territory were it running Windows. The 11.6in 1,366x768 resolution display has also been improved with an anti-glare coating that should improve visibility when working outside or in direct sunlight.
4GB of RAM and a 16GB SSD should help Chrome OS boot in less than seven seconds, although that capacity means you won't have a lot of room to store files. Thankfully Acer has made a deal with Google to give C270 owners 100GB of Google Drive storage for two years. You'll be able to transfer files over the USB or USB3 port, or through the SD card reader. There's also an HDMI video output for connecting to an external display.
The C270 Chromebook will go on sale in the UK from the end of October onwards. Currently only euro pricing is available, with European buyers expected to pay €249. That should translate to roughly £230 when it reaches our shores.
