Top Reviews this week: Grand Theft Auto V, iOS 7 and Seagate Laptop Ultrathin 500GB

We’ve had a busy week with news coming out of companies like Nokia, BlackBerry, Google and Apple. Here are the fun reviews you may have missed this week. Grand Theft Auto V (9.5/10)With this, Rockstar has released what many will consider to be the best game in the long-running franchise. It might even convince some people to let go of Vice City and San Andreas, and instead pick GTA 5 as their favourites. Despite the lack of any compelling or halfway-tolerable female characters, the heists, characters and the world all come together to prove why Rockstar is still one of the best at making open-world games, if not the best. Grand Theft Auto 5 is Rockstar at its best.

Seagate Laptop Ultrathin 500GB (6.5/10)The Seagate Ultrathin 500GB drive costs around Rs 5300 (exclusive of taxes) which comes to around Rs 11.38 per GB. If you look at it purely from an HDD perspective, that is a high price. Although the 5mm thickness is unique, we fail to see how it will immediately benefit end consumers unless they are planning to make a thin housing for the drive. Just replacing your older drive with the ultrathin drive, will not really boost your performance if you are still using a SATA 6 Gbps drive. The ultrathin drive actually makes more sense for the OEMs who can think of incorporating various form factors around this slim drive - slimmer Ultrabooks, slim tablets, slim external drives and so on. For end consumers, we would still vote for the Seagate Laptop thin SSHD which costs Rs 6300 but which at least offers a real value in the form of an SSD cache segment.

Just to give you a perspective of how thin the drive is. The 7mm Seagate Laptop Thin SSHD is below the 5mm Seagate Laptop Ultrathin drive

iOS 7 (6/10)Overall, iOS 7 is definitely a welcome change to the way iOS devices have been looking. The new UI, colour scheme and icons look good. The updated camera app, the new photo gallery are also good tweaks. Apple has taken a really good step by learning from Android and baking in a new control panel, which makes accessing features a lot easier. However, problems like the device hanging and freezing cannot be discounted. While these may be one-offs, the issues still seem worrisome. Apple’s efforts, though, are commendable. The update makes the UI feel good, and the colour scheme looks greats. While the company has not made any path breaking changes, the tweaks all come together to make a good looking UI and operating system.
